World Humanitarian Day: UN chief calls for safety of aid workers

(MENAFN) On World Humanitarian Day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised aid workers for their critical role in supporting people affected by war and natural disasters, while stressing the urgent need to safeguard their safety.

He noted that more than 300 million individuals worldwide depend on humanitarian assistance, yet relief workers themselves are increasingly coming under attack. “Last year, at least 390 aid workers - a record high - were killed across the world. From Gaza to Sudan to Myanmar and beyond,” he said.

The UN chief underscored that “International law is clear: humanitarians must be respected and protected. They can never be targeted.”

In his video address, Guterres warned that although the principles of international law are binding on all parties to conflict, they are repeatedly ignored. “The rules and tools exist,” he emphasized. “What is missing is political will and moral courage.”

Closing his remarks, he declared, “An attack on humanitarians is an attack on humanity.”
